Ratio and Proportion Made Simple for School Students

Ratio is one of those topics that looks easy in Class 6 and then quietly becomes the backbone of half the maths paper — mixtures, partnerships, speed, scale drawings, profit sharing, even chemistry later on.

Students who are comfortable with ratio find those topics straightforward. Students who are not end up memorising a separate method for each one.

Here is how to build that comfort properly.

What a ratio actually says

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind. Writing 3 : 5 means for every 3 of the first, there are 5 of the second.

The single most useful habit is to convert a ratio into parts:

3 : 5 means 3 parts + 5 parts = 8 parts in total.

Once a child thinks in parts, most questions become one division.

Divide ₹4,000 between two people in the ratio 3 : 5.

  • Total parts = 8
  • One part = 4000 ÷ 8 = ₹500
  • Shares = 3 × 500 = ₹1,500 and 5 × 500 = ₹2,500

No formula, no cross-multiplication. Find one part, then multiply.

Three-way and four-way ratios

The method does not change when there are more terms.

Divide 84 sweets among three children in the ratio 2 : 3 : 7.

  • Total parts = 12
  • One part = 84 ÷ 12 = 7
  • Shares = 14, 21 and 49

The check is always the same: the shares must add back to the original total. 14 + 21 + 49 = 84 ✓

Teach that check as a habit. It catches most errors instantly.

Equivalent ratios and simplifying

Ratios behave like fractions. Multiply or divide both sides by the same number and the ratio is unchanged.

  • 6 : 9 = 2 : 3 (divide both by 3)
  • 0.4 : 0.6 = 4 : 6 = 2 : 3 (multiply both by 10, then simplify)
  • 1/2 : 1/3 = 3 : 2 (multiply both by 6)

That last one catches many students. When a ratio contains fractions, multiply through by the LCM of the denominators first.

Combining two ratios

This is the step that separates confident students from the rest.

A : B = 2 : 3 and B : C = 4 : 5. Find A : B : C.

B appears as 3 in one ratio and 4 in the other. Make them match by scaling to the LCM of 3 and 4 = 12:

  • A : B = 2 : 3 → multiply by 4 → 8 : 12
  • B : C = 4 : 5 → multiply by 3 → 12 : 15

So A : B : C = 8 : 12 : 15.

The rule is simply: make the common term equal in both ratios, then read straight across.

Proportion: the four-number relationship

A proportion says two ratios are equal: a : b = c : d, or a/b = c/d.

The property worth memorising is that the product of the extremes equals the product of the means: a × d = b × c.

If 5 books cost ₹350, what do 8 books cost?

  • 5/350 = 8/x
  • 5x = 2800 → x = ₹560

Direct and inverse proportion

The mistake students make is applying direct proportion everywhere. Before writing anything, ask: if this quantity doubles, does the other double or halve?

If 6 workers build a wall in 10 days, how long will 15 workers take?

More workers means fewer days, so it is inverse:

  • 6 × 10 = 15 × x → x = 60 ÷ 15 = 4 days

Where ratio shows up later

This is why the topic is worth over-learning:

  • Partnership — profit shared in the ratio of investment × time
  • Mixtures — the ratio of ingredients before and after adding more
  • Speed — for a fixed distance, speed and time are inversely proportional
  • Scale drawings and maps — a ratio by definition
  • Similar triangles — corresponding sides in proportion
  • Chemistry — mole ratios use exactly this arithmetic

A child who is fluent with parts and with combining ratios meets all of these as familiar ground.

A practice routine that works

  1. Days 1–3 — convert ratios to parts and divide totals. Twenty questions a day.
  2. Days 4–6 — simplify ratios involving decimals and fractions.
  3. Days 7–10 — combining two ratios into three terms.
  4. Days 11–14 — direct versus inverse word problems, deciding the type before calculating.

Frequently asked questions

What class does ratio start? Usually Class 6, with proportion following in Class 7. It then reappears in almost every later topic.

My child mixes up ratio and fraction. How do I explain the difference? In 3 : 5, the fraction of the total held by the first part is 3/8, not 3/5. Ratio compares part to part; fraction compares part to whole. Drawing 8 boxes and shading 3 makes this clear immediately.

How do I know whether a problem is direct or inverse? Ask the doubling question: if I double one quantity, does the other double or halve? That single test settles it.

Are ratio questions common in competitive exams? Very. Ratio, percentage and averages together make up a large share of the quantitative section in most Indian competitive papers.
