You may have seen videos of children adding huge numbers in seconds, fingers flicking through empty air. That's Anzan — mental abacus calculation — and it's one of the most remarkable skills the abacus develops. Here's how it actually works.

What Anzan means

Anzan (暗算) is Japanese for "mental calculation." In abacus training, it specifically means calculating by visualising an imaginary abacus in your mind and moving its beads mentally — no physical tool, no pen, no paper.

How a physical skill becomes mental

The progression is gradual and natural:

  1. Physical stage: The child performs calculations by moving real beads, learning the patterns deeply.
  2. Imitation stage: They "air-abacus," moving fingers as if beads were there, picturing the movements.
  3. Visualisation stage: The mental image becomes so clear that the hands are no longer needed — the child simply sees the abacus and reads off the answer.

This is why abacus is so powerful: it literally installs a calculation machine in the imagination.

Why it's so fast

Most of us calculate using the brain's language centres — we "say" the steps internally, which is slow. Anzan users process numbers with the brain's visual-spatial system instead. Seeing is far faster than talking, which is why trained students can outpace a calculator on everyday sums.
