Vedic Maths Fast Multiplication Tricks That Actually Work

Priti Gupta25 June 20262 min read
Learn three Vedic Maths multiplication tricks you can use today — multiply numbers near 100, square numbers ending in 5, and multiply any two numbers crosswise.

Vedic Maths multiplication tricks feel like magic the first time you see them — but they're just clever patterns anyone can learn. Here are three you can start using in the next five minutes.

Trick 1: Square any number ending in 5

To square a number ending in 5 (like 65²):

  1. Take the digit(s) before the 5 → here, 6.
  2. Multiply it by the next number up → 6 × 7 = 42.
  3. Stick 25 on the end → 4225.

So 65² = 4225. Try 85²: 8 × 9 = 72 → 7225. Instant.

Trick 2: Multiply numbers near 100 (Nikhilam)

To multiply 97 × 96:

  1. Find how far each is below 100: 97 is −3, 96 is −4.
  2. Left part: subtract crosswise → 97 − 4 = 93 (or 96 − 3 = 93).
  3. Right part: multiply the deficits → 3 × 4 = 12.
  4. Combine → 9312.

So 97 × 96 = 9312. This works brilliantly for numbers just below 100.

Trick 3: Crosswise multiplication (Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam)

This is the universal method for any two-digit multiplication, e.g. 23 × 41:

  1. Units: 3 × 1 = 3
  2. Cross: (2 × 1) + (3 × 4) = 2 + 12 = 14 → write 4, carry 1
  3. Tens: 2 × 4 = 8, plus carry 1 = 9
  4. Read it off → 943

So 23 × 41 = 943, done left-to-right in one line.

Why these work in exams

These methods reduce steps, which means fewer chances for error and far more speed — a huge advantage in timed competitive exams where every second counts.

How to practise them

  • Master one trick at a time until it's automatic.
  • Do 10 problems a day per trick for a week.
  • Then mix them so you learn to pick the right tool.

Frequently asked questions

Are these tricks allowed in exams? Yes — they're just faster mental methods. The answer is the same; you simply reach it quicker.

Do they work for big numbers too? Crosswise multiplication scales to three- and four-digit numbers with practice.
