Vedic Maths for Algebra: Going Beyond Arithmetic

Vedic Maths is usually presented as a set of arithmetic shortcuts — fast multiplication, quick squares, easy division. That is where most courses stop.

Vedic Maths is usually presented as a set of arithmetic shortcuts — fast multiplication, quick squares, easy division. That is where most courses stop.

But several of the sutras were never purely arithmetic. They apply directly to algebra, and they can make factorising, solving equations and expanding brackets noticeably quicker.

Here is how the main ones work on algebraic expressions.

Why the sutras generalise

A sutra is a pattern, not a numeric recipe. "Vertically and crosswise" describes a way of combining terms. Whether those terms are digits or algebraic terms does not change the pattern.

Once a student sees that, the same technique they use for 23 × 47 works on (2x + 3)(4x + 7).

Vertically and crosswise for multiplying binomials

This is the most immediately useful application.

To multiply (ax + b)(cx + d):

  • Vertically on the left: a × c → the x² coefficient
  • Crosswise: (a × d) + (b × c) → the x coefficient
  • Vertically on the right: b × d → the constant

(2x + 3)(4x + 7)

  • Left: 2 × 4 = 8 → 8x²
  • Cross: (2 × 7) + (3 × 4) = 14 + 12 = 26 → 26x
  • Right: 3 × 7 = 21
  • Answer: 8x² + 26x + 21

Same three steps as multiplying two-digit numbers. Students who have drilled the arithmetic version pick this up in minutes, and it is faster than the usual FOIL-then-collect approach because the like terms are combined as you go.

Three terms

The pattern extends. For (x² + 2x + 3)(x² + 4x + 5), work through five column positions, combining crosswise pairs at each. It is systematic and less error-prone than expanding nine products and then collecting.

Factorising with the same pattern in reverse

To factorise 6x² + 17x + 12, run the crosswise pattern backwards.

  • The x² term: 6 = 2 × 3 (or 6 × 1)
  • The constant: 12 = 3 × 4 (or 2 × 6, 12 × 1)
  • Need crosswise sum = 17

Try 2x and 3x with 3 and 4: (2x + 3)(3x + 4) → cross = 8 + 9 = 17 ✓

Answer: (2x + 3)(3x + 4)

The advantage over trial-and-error is that you are testing crosswise sums directly rather than expanding each guess fully.

Nikhilam for algebraic squares

The "all from 9 and the last from 10" idea gives a fast route to squares near a convenient base.

For (x + 5)² the standard identity applies, but Nikhilam thinking helps with awkward cases:

(x − 3)² where you also need the numeric value at x = 103

Rather than substituting then squaring 100², use the base idea: 103 − 3 = 100, and 100² = 10,000 immediately.

Paravartya for division and equations

Paravartya Yojayet — "transpose and apply" — is the sutra behind moving terms across an equals sign, and it extends to dividing polynomials.

Solve (2x + 3)/(x − 1) = 5

  • Transpose: 2x + 3 = 5(x − 1)
  • 2x + 3 = 5x − 5 → 8 = 3x → x = 8/3

For polynomial division, Paravartya gives a compact alternative to long division when the divisor is linear.

Sunyam Samyasamuccaye: when things are equal, it's zero

This sutra says: if a common factor appears throughout, it equals zero.

Solve 5(x + 2) + 3(x + 2) = 0

Both terms share (x + 2), so (x + 2) = 0 → x = −2. No expansion needed.

Solve (x + 3)/(x + 5) = (x + 1)/(x + 7)

Cross-multiplying is standard, but note that the sum of numerator and denominator on each side is 2x + 8 in both cases. When those sums are equal, the sutra gives 2x + 8 = 0 → x = −4, in one line.

What this is good for, and what it is not

Useful forNot useful for
Expanding brackets quicklyProofs and derivations
Factorising quadraticsUnderstanding why a method works
Linear equations with fractionsCoordinate geometry, calculus
Checking an answer fastReplacing the school method in exams

That last point matters. In board exams you must show standard working. Use these to get the answer quickly and to verify, then write the expected steps.

Who this suits

Class 8 upwards, once algebra is established and the arithmetic sutras are already automatic. Attempting algebraic applications before the arithmetic versions are fluent tends to confuse rather than help.

Our 16 Vedic Maths sutras explained covers the arithmetic foundations these build on.

Frequently asked questions

Is this taught in normal Vedic Maths courses? Often not. Most stop at arithmetic. The algebraic applications are genuinely part of the system but are usually treated as advanced.

Will it help with board exams? Indirectly. It gets you the answer and lets you check your work, but write the standard method in the answer script.

What class should start this? Class 8 and above, after arithmetic sutras are fluent.

Does it conflict with what school teaches? No. Vertically-and-crosswise gives the same result as expanding brackets; it just organises the work differently.

Is Vedic Maths useful for JEE-level algebra? For speed on routine manipulation, yes. For the conceptual problem solving those exams test, standard techniques and practice matter more.

Build the arithmetic first

Every algebraic application here rests on the arithmetic versions being automatic.

Our Vedic Maths course runs from Class 4 and reaches these algebraic applications for older students.

Can Vedic Maths Help With CBSE Board Exams?

Board exams reward accuracy and time management more than cleverness. So parents reasonably ask whether Vedic Maths — a system of shortcuts — actually helps, or whether it is a distraction from the standard methods the answer script demands.
