How Maths and Cubing Competitions Build a Child's Confidence

Competitions aren't just about winning. Discover how maths and Rubik's Cube competitions build confidence, resilience and motivation in children.

Most parents think of competitions as something for the "topper" child — a place where a few gifted kids collect medals and everyone else feels worse about themselves.

After a decade of preparing children for maths olympiads and cubing events, we have seen the opposite. The children who gain the most from competitions are usually not the ones who win. They are the quiet, unsure ones who discover they can do something difficult in front of other people.

Here is what actually happens to a child's confidence when they compete — and how to make sure it is a positive experience rather than a damaging one.

Why competitions work differently from exams

School exams and competitions look similar, but a child experiences them very differently.

That last row is the important one. Because a competition is optional, a child's brain treats it as a challenge rather than a threat. Psychologists call this a challenge state rather than a threat state — and children learn far more in a challenge state.

The six ways competitions build real confidence

1. Confidence becomes evidence-based

Telling a child "you're brilliant at maths" does very little. Children discount praise from parents almost automatically.

But a child who prepared for eight weeks, walked into an unfamiliar hall and completed the paper has evidence. That evidence cannot be argued away, and it is what genuine self-belief is built on.

2. They learn that nerves are survivable

Every child feels sick before their first competition. Every single one.

The lesson is not "don't be nervous." It is: I was nervous and I did it anyway, and nothing terrible happened. That single experience transfers to school presentations, interviews, and eventually job interviews twenty years later.

3. Effort gets connected to outcome

In school, the link between effort and result is blurry — a child can revise hard and still get a mediocre mark because of one careless question.

In cubing especially, the link is brutally clear. Practise the algorithms, your time drops. Skip a week, it does not. Children internalise this faster from a stopwatch than from any lecture.

4. They meet children like them

A child who loves numbers can feel like an oddity in their class. At a maths olympiad or a cube competition, they are suddenly surrounded by dozens of children who also find this fun.

Parents consistently tell us this is the moment something shifts. Their child stops hiding the interest and starts owning it.

5. Losing gets rehearsed in a safe place

Almost every child loses at their first competition. This is genuinely useful.

Losing at a weekend event, with a parent nearby and another competition three months away, is an extremely low-stakes way to practise handling disappointment. Compare that with facing a first real failure at 17, during board exams, with no practice at all.

6. Identity changes from "good at maths" to "someone who competes"

This is subtle but powerful. "Good at maths" is fragile — one bad test can break it. "Someone who trains and competes" is durable, because it describes what the child does, not what they are.

What the research says about children and competition

The evidence is not that competition is universally good — it is that the framing decides the outcome.

Work by Carol Dweck on growth mindset found that children praised for effort and strategy kept choosing harder challenges, while children praised for being clever avoided them for fear of losing the label.

Applied to competitions, this is very practical:

  • "You worked hard on those division drills and it showed" → builds resilience.
  • "You're so talented, that's why you won" → builds fragility.

Same event. Opposite effect. The difference is entirely in what the adult says afterwards.

How to make competitions a positive experience

Before the competition

  • Let the child choose to enter. A competition a child is pushed into produces anxiety, not confidence.
  • Set a process goal, not a result goal. "Finish every question you attempt" or "beat your own practice time" — not "get in the top ten."
  • Practise under real conditions. Timer running, no interruptions, sitting at a table. The unfamiliarity is what rattles children, so remove it in advance.
  • Say out loud that you do not care about the rank. Then behave that way, because children read behaviour, not words.

On the day

  • Arrive early enough that the room stops feeling strange.
  • Keep the morning boringly normal — usual breakfast, no lectures in the car.
  • Avoid last-minute cramming. It raises anxiety and adds nothing.

Afterwards — the part that matters most

The first ninety seconds after your child comes out will shape how they feel about competing for years.

Ask these:

  • "What was the most interesting question?"
  • "What would you do differently next time?"
  • "Was there a moment you felt stuck, and what did you do?"

Avoid these:

  • "What was your rank?"
  • "How did [other child] do?"
  • "Did you get question 7 right?"

Debrief the process. The result will be announced by someone else soon enough.

Which competitions are worth considering in India

  • Maths olympiads — school-level olympiads, IMO and similar. Good for children who enjoy puzzle-style problems. Our guide on preparing your child for a maths olympiad covers the practical steps.
  • Abacus and mental-arithmetic competitions — usually organised by the training academy or federation, with children graded by level so they compete against their own stage.
  • Speed cubing competitionsWorld Cube Association events run in most major Indian cities. They are famously friendly, and beginners are genuinely welcomed. Our parent's guide to Rubik's Cube competitions explains the format.

Cubing events are often the best first competition, because the child competes against the clock rather than directly against another person.

Warning signs that competition is doing harm

Be honest with yourself if you see these:

  • Your child feels sick or cries before events they previously enjoyed.
  • They only talk about rank, never about the problems.
  • They stop wanting to try new things in case they are not immediately good.
  • They hide practice results from you.

If you see two or more of these, step back for six months. The competition is not the problem — the pressure around it is, and that is adjustable.

Frequently asked questions

What age can a child start competing? Cubing competitions accept children as young as 5 or 6. Maths olympiads usually start around Class 3. Start when the child is curious, not when you think they are ready to win.

My child came last. Should they compete again? Ask them, a week later, once the sting has faded. Many children say yes. If they do, they have already learned the most valuable lesson competitions teach.

Does competing help with school performance? Indirectly and quite reliably. Children who compete get better at working under time pressure, checking their own work, and staying calm — all of which show up in exams.

How often should a child compete? Two to four events a year is plenty. More than that and preparation starts crowding out ordinary childhood.
