There is a particular kind of evening that many parents will recognise. The maths exam is in two days. The book is open. The child is in tears, insisting they know nothing, and you are somewhere between sympathy and frustration.
Maths exam stress is real, common, and — this is the important part — largely fixable. Not by telling a child to relax, which never works, but by changing three things: how they prepare, what they do in the exam hall, and what happens at home around the exam.
Here is a practical plan.
Why maths causes more stress than other subjects
Maths anxiety is well documented and behaves differently from general exam nerves. Three things make maths uniquely stressful for children:
1. Answers are visibly right or wrong. In history, a weak answer still earns partial credit. In maths, a child feels they either got it or they did not. That binary feels far more exposing.
2. It builds on itself. A gap in fractions in Class 5 quietly becomes a crisis in algebra in Class 8. Children often sense they are missing something foundational but cannot name it — and that vague dread is worse than a specific problem.
3. Anxiety directly consumes working memory. This is the cruel part. Worry occupies the same mental workspace that multi-step calculation needs. So an anxious child genuinely performs worse than their actual ability — and then takes the poor mark as proof they are "bad at maths", which increases the anxiety. Researchers call this the maths anxiety loop.
Breaking that loop is the whole job.
Part 1: Preparation that reduces stress
Most exam stress is created weeks earlier, by the way a child studies.
Practise, don't re-read
Re-reading solved examples feels productive and is nearly useless. The brain recognises the steps and concludes "I know this" — a phenomenon called the fluency illusion.
Instead: cover the solution, attempt the problem, then check. This is harder and feels worse. That is exactly why it works.
Do timed practice before the exam, not on the day
If the first time your child works against a clock is in the exam hall, the timer itself becomes a stressor. Two or three timed papers at home removes that entirely.
Sit them at a table, set a timer, no interruptions, full paper. The goal is not the score — it is making the conditions boring and familiar.
Fix the arithmetic layer
A surprising share of "I can't do maths" is actually slow, uncertain arithmetic. A child who has to think hard about 7 × 8 has no mental capacity left for the actual problem.
This is where mental-maths training pays off in a way tuition often does not. When calculation becomes automatic, the child's whole working memory is free for reasoning. Identify the actual gaps
Ask your child to sort their syllabus into three lists: can do confidently, can do slowly, cannot do. Most children have far more in list one than they believe, and seeing that in writing is itself calming.
Then spend revision time on list two. List three often needs a teacher, and list one needs almost nothing.
Build a routine, not a cram
A child revising 25 minutes a day for three weeks will outperform the same child doing six hours the night before, with a fraction of the distress. Our daily study routine guide has a workable template.
Part 2: Strategies for the exam hall
Teach these explicitly. Children rarely work them out alone.

| A hard question early on | Skip it, mark it, move on. Answer three easy ones to rebuild confidence, then return. |
| Panic rising mid-exam | Put the pen down. Breathe out slowly for six counts, three times. Ninety seconds, and it works. |
| Finished early | Re-check the questions you rushed, not the ones you found easy. |
| Ran out of time | Write the method even without the final answer — method marks are real. |
The two-minute rule
Teach your child: if two minutes pass with no progress on a question, leave it. Children lose enormous marks by stubbornly staying on one question while five easier ones go unattempted.
Read the paper first
Sixty seconds scanning the whole paper lets the brain start working on hard problems in the background, and prevents the shock of discovering a difficult section with ten minutes left.
Part 3: What parents should do at home
This part has more impact than most parents expect.
Never say "I was bad at maths too"
It is meant kindly. It lands as permission to give up — and worse, as evidence that this is hereditary and unfixable.
Say instead: "Maths takes practice for everyone. Let's find the bit that's stuck."
Praise the process, not the mark
"You worked through that whole set without giving up" builds resilience. "You're so clever" makes the child terrified of the day they get something wrong.
Keep the night before boring
No new topics. No testing them at dinner. A normal evening, a light review of confident material only, and an early night. Sleep does more for exam performance than a late revision session ever will.
Manage your own face
Children read parental anxiety instantly. If you are tense about the result, they will absorb it and interpret it as pressure. Whatever you feel, the useful performance is calm confidence.
After the exam, ask the right question
Not "how did it go?" — which invites an anxious guess. Ask: "What was the most interesting question?" It moves the conversation from judgement to content.
When it is more than ordinary nerves
Consider extra support if your child:
- Feels physically sick or cannot sleep for several nights before maths tests specifically
- Performs dramatically worse in exams than in homework on the same topics
- Says "I'm just stupid at maths" as a settled fact about themselves
- Avoids maths homework entirely, or hides it
The gap between homework performance and exam performance is the clearest signal. It means the knowledge is there and anxiety is blocking access to it — which is very treatable.

A four-week plan before the next maths exam
Week 1 — Sort the syllabus into the three lists. Start 20 minutes of daily practice. Focus on the "slow" list.
Week 2 — Continue daily practice. Add one timed section under exam conditions. Get help on one topic from the "cannot do" list.
Week 3 — Full timed past paper on a weekend. Review only the mistakes, and categorise each as careless, method, or didn't know. Each needs a different fix.
Week 4 — Light revision of confident material. One more short timed paper early in the week. Nothing new after Wednesday. Normal bedtimes throughout.
The categorising step in Week 3 is the most useful thing in this list. Careless errors need slower checking; method errors need re-teaching; "didn't know" needs actual study. Most children treat all three the same way and fix none of them.
Frequently asked questions
My child understands at home but freezes in exams. Why? Almost always anxiety consuming working memory. Timed practice at home is the single most effective fix, because it makes exam conditions unremarkable.
Should we get a tutor? If there are genuine knowledge gaps, yes. If the child knows the material but panics, a tutor may add pressure — practice conditions and confidence work will help more.
How do I stop myself getting frustrated during revision? Keep sessions short and end while it is still going well. Most parent-child revision arguments happen after the 30-minute mark.
Can mental-maths training really reduce exam stress? Indirectly but meaningfully. When arithmetic becomes automatic, children have more capacity for the actual problem and finish with time to check — both of which reduce panic considerably.
