Almost every parent we meet raises the same worry, usually in a slightly guilty voice: "He's on the phone too much. I don't know how to stop it."
You are not failing. Screens are engineered by very large teams to be difficult to put down, and willpower was never going to be a fair fight. But the answer is not a total ban — that rarely survives contact with real family life. The answer is balance, structure, and giving the brain something better to do.
Here is a practical guide that works in an ordinary Indian household, with homework, tuition, and two tired parents.
First, separate the two kinds of screen time
Not all screen time is equal, and treating it as one blob is why most rules fail.

Ninety minutes of passive scrolling and ninety minutes of building something are not the same thing, and children know it. Rules that ignore the difference feel unfair, and children stop respecting them.
Start here: cap the passive category tightly, be relaxed about the creative one.
What screens actually do to attention
The concern is not that screens make children less intelligent. It is narrower and better evidenced than that: heavy short-form video use trains a child to expect a reward every few seconds.
When that child then sits with a maths worksheet — which offers no reward for several minutes — it feels unbearably slow. The child is not lazy. Their baseline for "acceptable stimulation" has been raised.
This is why parents often report the same pattern: the child can watch videos for two hours but "can't concentrate for ten minutes" on homework. Those two facts are connected.
The good news is that the effect works in reverse too. Attention span responds to training — which is exactly what brain-building activities provide.
What counts as a brain-building activity?
A genuinely brain-building activity usually has three features:
- It requires sustained attention — several minutes of focus with no external reward.
- It has a visible difficulty curve — it gets harder as you improve.
- It produces something — a solved cube, a correct answer, a finished drawing.
By that definition, here are activities that qualify:
Mental arithmetic and abacus

Rubik's Cube and puzzles

Board games and card games
Chess, Catan, Uno, even Ludo with mental score-keeping. Strategy games train planning ahead; card games train quick arithmetic without it feeling like maths.
Reading physical books
Still the single best attention-training activity there is, because the reward is entirely delayed.
Building and making
Lego, origami, model kits, cooking with measurements, simple electronics.
Physical play
Genuinely underrated for focus. Children who move more concentrate better afterwards — this is one of the most consistent findings in the whole field.

A realistic daily balance
Forget perfect. Aim for a shape like this on a school day:

That last row does more for behaviour and sleep than any other single rule. Screens close to bedtime delay sleep onset, and a tired child looks exactly like an inattentive one the next day.
On weekends, widen the screen window but keep the bedtime rule.
Five rules that actually work
1. Screens are earned, not removed
"Finish your practice, then you can have the tablet" works far better than "no tablet today." The first is a deal; the second is a punishment. Children negotiate with punishments and comply with deals.
2. Put the boring activity in a boring slot
Do not schedule abacus practice against the child's favourite show. Do it at 5pm when nothing else is happening. You are not competing with entertainment — you are filling empty time.
3. Make the alternative physically visible
A Rubik's Cube on the dining table gets picked up. A cube in a cupboard does not. Leave puzzles, books and a deck of cards out where hands land.
4. Model it, at least sometimes
If you scroll through dinner, no rule you set will hold. You do not have to be perfect — but children calibrate to what adults actually do.
5. Keep one screen-free zone and one screen-free hour
Most families find the dining table and the hour before bed are the two that stick. Two rules that are always enforced beat ten that are enforced sometimes.
Age-by-age guidance
Ages 3–5 — Very limited passive screen time; short, co-watched sessions. Focus on physical play and simple puzzles.
Ages 6–9 — This is the ideal window for building a daily brain-training habit, because the child's routine is still parent-shaped. 15 minutes of abacus or cube practice at this age becomes automatic. It is also the best age to start abacus.
Ages 10–13 — Negotiate rather than dictate. Let the child help design the rules; they enforce what they helped write. Interactive and creative screen use can expand.
Ages 14+ — Shift from limits to self-management. Talk openly about how attention works and why it matters for their own goals.
What to do if screen time is already out of control
Do not go cold turkey — it usually collapses within four days and costs you credibility.
- Measure first, quietly. Check the phone's own screen-time report for a week. Do not react yet.
- Cut the passive category only. Leave games and creative apps alone. This alone often removes half the total.
- Add before you subtract. Introduce one attractive offline activity a week before tightening any rule.
- Move one anchor. Pick the single highest-impact rule — usually no screens in the last 45 minutes before bed — and hold that one absolutely.
- Expect pushback for about ten days, then a new normal.
Frequently asked questions
How much screen time is too much? Rather than a fixed number, watch for these signals: sleep is affected, the child cannot tolerate boredom, or screens have displaced physical play and reading. Those matter more than the exact minutes.
Are educational apps fine? Better than passive video, but they are not equivalent to offline focus work. An app still supplies constant feedback; a worksheet or a cube does not.
My child says all their friends have unlimited screen time. Almost certainly untrue, and irrelevant either way. What works is being calm and consistent rather than winning the argument.

The most effective screen-time strategy is not restriction. It is replacement — giving your child an offline skill that is genuinely satisfying to get better at.
