10 Brain-Boosting Math Games to Play With Your Child at Home

Priti Gupta25 June 20262 min read
Ten simple, screen-free math games you can play at home to sharpen your child's mental math, number sense and concentration — no special equipment needed.

You don't need expensive apps to build your child's number skills. Some of the best maths practice happens at the dinner table or in the car. Here are ten games we recommend to parents — all free, all fun.

Why games beat worksheets

Children learn fastest when they don't realise they're learning. Games remove the fear of "getting it wrong" and turn arithmetic into play, which is exactly when the brain absorbs the most.

The 10 games

  1. Number Bonds Race — Call out a number; your child shouts two numbers that add up to it. Speed it up over time.
  2. Supermarket Estimator — Ask your child to estimate the total bill before checkout. Closest guess wins.
  3. Dice Multiplication — Roll two dice and multiply. Three dice for older kids.
  4. Buzz — Count up, but say "Buzz" instead of any multiple of 7 (or any chosen number).
  5. Car Number Plates — Add the digits on number plates you pass. First to the correct sum wins.
  6. Make 24 — Use four numbers and any operations to reach 24. A classic brain-burner.
  7. Memory Sums — Say a running total out loud: "Start at 3… add 5… subtract 2…" Can they keep up?
  8. Clock Maths — "It's 4:40 now. What time will it be in 35 minutes?"
  9. Shopping Change — Give pretend money and have them work out the change.
  10. Pattern Hunt — Spot number patterns around the house: tiles, stairs, calendar dates.

Make it a habit, not a chore

Just ten minutes a day of playful maths does more than an hour of forced worksheets. Rotate the games so they stay fresh, and let your child win sometimes — confidence fuels practice.

Frequently asked questions

What age are these for? Most work from age 5 up; simply scale the difficulty.

My child says they hate maths — will these help? Yes. Games rebuild the enjoyment that worksheets often kill. Start with the easy, silly ones.

Pair games with structured learning

Games build enthusiasm; a structured program builds mastery. Many of our students practise these at home alongside their abacus or mental-maths classes. To give your child a strong foundation, book a free demo class or read more tips on our blog.
