In a typical quantitative section you might have under a minute per question. A candidate using long, conventional methods runs out of time; one using mental shortcuts solves more questions, more accurately, with time left to review. Speed maths is the single highest-leverage skill for these exams.
Technique 1: Master your tables to 20 (and squares to 30)
This sounds basic, but it's the foundation. Instant recall of tables, squares and cubes removes the most common time-sink. Drill these until they're automatic.
Technique 2: Multiplication shortcuts (Vedic methods)
- Near 100: Use the Nikhilam method for numbers like 97 × 96.
- Crosswise: Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam multiplies any numbers in one line.
- Numbers ending in 5: Square them instantly (e.g., 75² = 5625).
Technique 3: Approximation for data interpretation
DI questions rarely need exact answers — they need the right option. Rounding numbers sensibly and comparing fractions by approximation saves enormous time. Learn when "close enough" is the smart move.
Technique 4: Percentage–fraction conversions
Memorise common conversions (1/8 = 12.5%, 1/6 ≈ 16.67%, etc.). Switching between fractions and percentages instantly speeds up profit-loss, interest and DI questions.
Technique 5: Smart elimination
Often you can rule out options by checking the last digit, rough magnitude, or whether the answer should be odd/even — without fully solving. This converts a calculation into a quick check.
