7 Common Mistakes Parents Make While Teaching Maths at Home

Priti Gupta25 June 20262 min read
Teaching your child maths at home? Avoid these 7 common mistakes that quietly create maths anxiety — and learn what to do instead for lasting confidence.

Helping with maths homework should build confidence — but a few well-meaning habits can do the opposite. Here are seven mistakes we see most often, and what to do instead.

1. Saying "I was bad at maths too"

It feels reassuring, but it tells your child that maths ability is fixed and inherited. Instead, model a growth mindset: "This is tricky — let's figure it out together."

2. Jumping in with the answer

When you solve it for them, you rob them of the struggle where learning happens. Ask guiding questions instead: "What do we know? What could we try first?"

3. Focusing only on the right answer

Maths is about reasoning, not just the final number. Ask your child to explain how they got there. A correct answer with no understanding won't survive the next exam.

4. Rushing

"Hurry up" turns maths into a stress test. Speed comes naturally after understanding. Early on, prioritise getting it right over getting it fast.

5. Comparing siblings or classmates

"Your sister could do this easily" damages confidence and motivation. Compare your child only to their own past progress.

6. Skipping the basics

Many "advanced" struggles are really shaky fundamentals — times tables, place value, fractions. If a topic feels impossible, drop back and rebuild the foundation first.

7. Making it all worksheets

Endless drills kill curiosity. Mix in games, real-life maths (cooking, shopping, scores) and puzzles so maths feels alive.

What to do instead — in one line

Be calm, ask questions, celebrate effort, and keep it playful. Your attitude toward maths shapes your child's more than any worksheet.

Frequently asked questions

What if I genuinely don't remember the maths? Perfect — learn alongside your child. It models exactly the curiosity you want them to have.

How much should I help with homework? Enough to unblock them, never enough to do it for them. Aim to ask more than you tell.

When home help isn't enough

Sometimes a child needs structured, step-by-step teaching and a coach who isn't also their parent. That's where we come in. Book a free demo to see our approach, or browse more parenting tips on our blog.
