"Should I put my child in abacus or Kumon?" is one of the most common questions Indian parents ask us — usually after a neighbour's child has joined one of them and the parent is wondering if they are falling behind.
Both are respected programmes with decades of history. But they are built on completely different ideas about how children learn maths. This guide explains how each one actually works, what skill each one builds, what they cost in time and money, and how to pick the one that fits your child.
The one-line difference
Abacus trains a child to calculate in their head by first using a physical tool, then visualising it. Kumon trains a child to work independently through a long, carefully graded sequence of worksheets.
One builds a mental skill. The other builds a study habit. Both are valuable — but they are not interchangeable.
How abacus training actually works
Abacus training has a clear physical-to-mental progression:
- Physical stage — the child learns bead values and finger movements on a real abacus (soroban). Addition and subtraction come first.
- Visualisation stage — the abacus is taken away, and the child pictures the beads moving in their mind. This is the technique called Anzan.
- Speed stage — the mental image becomes automatic, and the child calculates faster than they could type the numbers into a calculator.

How Kumon actually works
Kumon is a worksheet-based self-learning method founded in Japan by Toru Kumon. The core idea is small increments, high repetition, independent work:
- The child takes a placement test and starts at a level they can complete comfortably — often below their school grade.
- They complete a set of worksheets daily, including at home, every single day.
- When they achieve both accuracy and a target time, they advance to the next slightly harder set.
- An instructor marks the work and adjusts the pace, but does not usually teach a lesson.
The strength here is discipline and independence. A child who sticks with Kumon for years builds a genuine habit of daily self-study, and covers a wide span of the maths curriculum.

What each one is genuinely best at
Choose abacus if you want…
- Fast mental calculation. This is the headline benefit and it is very real. A Level 4 child can multiply three-digit numbers mentally.
- Better concentration. Mental abacus requires holding an image steady for several seconds — that is focus training.
- A confidence boost. Mental maths is a visible, impressive skill. Children love showing it off, and that pride keeps them practising.
- Help with maths anxiety or number difficulty. The visual approach often works for children who struggle with the abstract, symbol-heavy school method. See how abacus helps children with dyscalculia.
Choose Kumon if you want…
- A daily study habit above everything else.
- Broad curriculum coverage rather than deep arithmetic skill.
- A programme that continues into secondary-school maths — abacus naturally completes after the levels are done.
- An older starting age. Abacus works best from around 5–12; Kumon has no upper limit.
The honest limitations of each
We would rather be straight with you than oversell.
Abacus limitations: it teaches arithmetic, not algebra, geometry or word problems. It will not directly teach your Class 9 child trigonometry. And it requires short daily practice — a child who practises once a week will plateau.
Kumon limitations: the repetition can feel dull, and some children resist the daily worksheet volume. Because it is self-directed, a child who does not understand a concept can get stuck repeating without insight. It also does not build mental calculation speed the way abacus does.
What about cost and time?
Both are broadly comparable in monthly fees in India, though this varies by city and centre. The bigger difference is time:
- Abacus: one class a week, plus 10–15 minutes of daily practice.
- Kumon: worksheets every single day, including weekends and holidays, plus centre visits.
For a family with a packed schedule, the daily worksheet load is the thing most likely to cause friction.
Which is better for exams?
This depends on the exam.
For timed competitive exams — Olympiads, NTSE, and later SSC, banking or railway exams — calculation speed is a direct advantage. A child who can compute mentally saves minutes per paper and makes fewer transcription errors. We cover this in speed maths techniques for competitive exams.

Many families we work with do abacus in the primary years for the mental-maths foundation, then shift focus to school and competitive-exam preparation later — often adding Vedic Maths around age 10 for shortcuts on larger numbers.
Can a child do both?
Technically yes. Practically, we usually advise one at a time, especially below age 9.
Both programmes depend on daily practice. Running two daily-practice programmes alongside school homework is how children start resenting maths altogether — the exact opposite of what you want. If you are keen on both, do abacus first (it has a natural completion point), then move to Kumon.
How to decide this week
Do not decide from a brochure. Do these three things:
- Watch an actual class of each, with your child present. Note whether your child leans in or checks out.
- Ask about the daily commitment in minutes, honestly, and picture it on a school night.
- Ask what happens at the end — what will your child be able to do after 12 months, stated specifically?
A good centre will answer all three without hesitation.

My child dislikes worksheets. Which is better? Abacus is likely the better fit. It is hands-on, visual and game-like, which suits children who disengage from repetitive paper work.
Will abacus make my child dependent on the tool? No — the opposite. The whole design of the programme is to remove the physical abacus and move the calculation into the child's head.
Does abacus help with school maths directly? It helps with the arithmetic backbone: faster, more accurate calculation and fewer careless errors. It does not teach geometry or algebra concepts.
Is Kumon better for older children? For a child above 12 who needs curriculum practice and study discipline, yes, Kumon or focused tuition generally fits better than starting abacus.
