10 Mental Math Tricks That Make Everyday Life Easier

Priti Gupta12 August 20262 min read
From splitting bills to quick discounts, these 10 practical mental math tricks help kids and adults calculate faster in real life — no calculator needed.

Mental maths isn't just for exams — it makes everyday life faster and smarter. Here are ten practical tricks your whole family can use, from the shop counter to the restaurant table.

Why everyday mental math matters

Every time you estimate a bill or check your change, you're exercising mental calculation — and that keeps the brain sharp. For children, real-life maths makes the subject feel useful, not just academic.

The 10 tricks

  1. 10% of anything: just move the decimal one place. ₹450 → ₹45. Great for tips and discounts.
  2. 20% quickly: find 10% and double it. For a tip, halve 10% for 5% and add.
  3. Splitting a bill: round up, divide, adjust. Fast and fair.
  4. Multiplying by 5: halve the number, then multiply by 10 (or ×10 then halve). 48 × 5 = 240.
  5. Multiplying by 11 (two-digit): add the two digits and put the sum in the middle. 36 × 11 → 3_(3+6)_6 = 396.
  6. Squaring numbers ending in 5: covered in our Vedic multiplication tricks — 45² = 2025.
  7. Quick percentages: x% of y = y% of x. 18% of 50 = 50% of 18 = 9.
  8. Adding from the left: add big digits first for a fast running estimate.
  9. Doubling and halving: to multiply, double one number and halve the other. 14 × 50 = 7 × 100 = 700.
  10. Rounding to estimate: round, calculate, then adjust — perfect for shopping totals.

Make it a family game
